Lord Of The Rings stars Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd have reunited for a “great night of conversation”.

British actor Monaghan, 49, shared a snap with his former co-stars to Instagram as the group reunited for dinner more than two decades on from their last film together.

The actors were gathered at a table and posing for a selfie taken by a gleeful-looking Monaghan, with Wood and Boyd smiling as Astin opted for a more serious pose.

The caption referenced their role as the small, humanoid creatures in the Lord Of The Rings films and Monaghan wrote: “Four halflings. Three cocktails. Two desserts.

“ONE great night of conversation. More to come. #BeCurious.”

“Shoutout to the couple in the back. Well played,” he added, referring to the two people photobombing them in the background.

US actor Astin shared a photo to his own Instagram page from the occasion and said: “The band’s all here.”

Fans flooded the comments with references to film-maker Peter Jackson’s Oscar-winning trilogy.

Lord Of The Rings was adapted into its first live-action film in 2001 and concluded with Return Of The King in 2003, but its global success led to many spin-off films and TV series.

The franchise is based on the 1950s novels by JRR Tolkien and follows the hobbits on their adventures to Mount Doom to destroy a ring and prevent Dark Lord Sauron from ruling the world.

Lord Of The Rings is set to return to cinemas next year with the Andy Serkis-directed film The Hunt For Gollum – and fans are keen to see stars from the original franchise reprise their roles.

The cast for the upcoming film is yet to be announced.

The 2000s film trilogy was led by Wood alongside Sir Ian McKellen, Orlando Bloom and Cate Blanchett – and his starring role turned him into a global household name.

He has since appeared in eclectic indie films such as Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind, Sin City and Maniac.

Astin, who rose to fame as a child actor in The Goonies, played Samwise Gamgee in the films and has continued to appear in mainstream projects such as 50 First Dates and Stranger Things.

Monaghan’s role as Merry Brandybuck made him into a star, leading to a major TV role in Lost and appearances in other major franchises such as X-Men and Star Wars.

He frequently collaborates with his Glasgow-born co-star Boyd – and they starred in food-travel series Billy And Dom Eat the World and hosted The Friendship Onion podcast together.

Beyond his role as Pippin Took, Boyd is also known for the comedy-horror Chucky franchise among other film roles.

He is also the lead singer and guitarist in rock band Beecake.
