A stretch of the M2 remains closed in both directions in Kent after an accident last night.

The motorway was closed to traffic near Medway services yesterday after a serious collision, which struck at about 9.10pm on the coastbound carriageway.

Police urged drivers to use other routes this morning ahead of the rush hour.

Kent Police said: ‘The remains closed in both directions between J3 and 5 (coastbound) and J5 and 4 (London-bound) following a serious collision coastbound near Medway Services, at around 9.10pm on Tuesday 27 October 2026.

‘Motorists should continue to find alternative routes if possible.’

The road is expected to remain closed for several hours, National Highways warned.

It said: ‘Emergency services including Kent Police are in attendance. National Highways Traffic Officers are also on scene assisting with traffic management.

‘Due to the nature of the incident, the road is expected to remain closed for several hours and in to daylight hours.’

Delays are building up on the M2 London-bound near Bredgar at J5, and on Sittingbourne Road A249 and M20 past Maidstone, which is used as a diversion.

Traffic is also snarling back for miles on the A229 Maidstone-bound lanes.

Metro has approached the emergency services for a comment.
