Firefighters are tackling a major blaze that has taken hold at a former primary school building in North Lanarkshire.

Images from the scene showed the building was badly damaged with flames shooting from the roof.

Police Scotland said parts of West George Street and Coltswood Road were closed and people living nearby were advised to keep their windows closed.

The building dates from 1902 and served as a primary school for more than a century until its closure in 2012.
