Police have launched a murder investigation after a 25-year-old man was shot dead near a busy south London pub.
Detectives remain at the scene in Clapham today after gunshots were heard near The Landor pub on Monday night.
A section of Willington Road remains cordoned off with a forensic tent set up on the residential street after the incident at about 10pm.
Residents said they heard several bangs followed by sirens as emergency services were called to the scene.
A witness told : ‘I heard four pops. I thought it was fireworks, but then an ambulance pulled up outside my flat.
‘Then I realised it was something serious.’
A former school friend of the man who died told : ‘He was a lovely, bouncy sort of guy.
‘We used to play together in the play park just 100 metres from where he died.’
Another woman at the scene claimed the victim was in the ‘wrong place, wrong time’.
‘It was mistaken identity,’ she told .
A London Ambulance Service spokesperson told in a statement: ‘We were called at 9:59pm on Monday 10 August to reports of a shooting on Landor Road, SW9.
‘We sent resources to the scene including an ambulance crew, an incident response officer and paramedics in fast response cars. We also dispatched a trauma team in a car from London’s Air Ambulance.
‘Our first paramedics arrived in three minutes.
‘Sadly, despite the best efforts of our crews, a man was pronounced dead at the scene.’
The forensic tent was erected on the pavement outside the Fenwick Estate a few minutes from Clapham North station.
Police are now trawling through footage from the Landor pub next to the crime scene.
A staff member said: ‘The police have the footage. The shooting was nothing to do with the pub, it was outside.
‘We have never had trouble here, but lately this area of Clapham has got worse. People seem to have lost their minds.’ There was a fatal stabbing a few streets ago recently.’
Detective Chief Superintendent Emma Bond, Central South Borough Commander said: ‘We understand that incident will cause concern within the local community and an increased police presence will remain in the area throughout the day as our enquiries continue. Our thoughts remain with the victim’s family for their tragic loss.
‘Officers have arrested a man on suspicion of murder, and we are working tirelessly to establish what happened.
‘We are asking anyone with information or anyone who may have witnessed the shooting to please contact us as soon as possible and support the ongoing investigation.’
