A man has been left with "lasting physical and psychological trauma" after being abducted, assaulted by multiple people armed with iron bars and then thrown from a moving car, police have said.

The man, aged in his 30s, was found lying on the Culvacullion Road in Gortin, County Tyrone, at about 21:30 on Sunday.

Police described it as a "brutal attack" and said the man had sustained a number of limb fractures, rib fractures and a head injury.

A vehicle was located on fire on nearby Rylagh Road a short time later and police said one line of enquiry is that this vehicle may have been used by those who carried out this assault.

Enquiries are continuing and police have appealed to to anyone who may have relevant information to contact them.
