A man has appeared in court accused of striking a delivery driver with a traffic cone during an anti-immigration protest.

Callum Thomson, 29, allegedly assaulted Muhammad Yaqoob in Glasgow's Bridge Street on 25 July.

Thomson faces a separate charge of conducting himself in a disorderly manner across the city on the same day.

He pleaded not guilty to the two charges at Glasgow Sheriff Court.

Court papers state Thomson "threw a traffic cone and did cause it to strike [Yaqoob] on the body to his injury."

He is alleged to have been wearing a balaclava and gloves at the time.

The charge goes on to say he formed part of a disorderly crowd, approached police cordons and challenged police officers in attendance.

It is alleged that Thomson, of Pollokshields, repeatedly shouted, swore, chanted and uttered racially offensive remarks.

Prosecutor Jason Grant said: "He allegedly formed part of an anti-immigration group and targeted a delivery driver as part of that crowd."

Sheriff Mary Shields set a hearing for next month and granted Thomson bail meantime with a special condition that Thomson does not contact Yaqoob.

About 1700 people turned up on Glasgow Green on 25 July.

The gathering began with an anti-racism protest, then counter-protesters gathered at the park.

Police said "disparate groups" engaged in acts of violence, disorder, intimidation and hate-motivated offences at various locations across the city afterwards.

Fifteen people were arrested on the day of the protests.

Police Scotland said a major investigation team was trying to identify more suspects and further arrests were planned.
