'Man and child' break into pub and flood cellar

A man and a child broke into a pub and "flooded" the cellar while stealing copper pipes, a landlord has said.

Jamie Thomas, the new owner of the Ernehale Pub in Arnold, Nottinghamshire, said what the pair took was worth about £20 in scrap, but the repairs would cost him thousands.

The 30-year-old, who is renovating the former Wetherspoons pub, said the break-in at about 19:30 BST on Sunday was stressful, but he would "get on" with the work needed to reopen in November as planned.

Nottinghamshire Police said a burglary investigation was under way and no arrests had been made.

CCTV footage appears to show a man and a child scaling the wall of the pub on Sunday evening.

Thomas said the pair managed to get in and take some copper pipes but failed to take the water tank as it was too heavy.

They instead took some lanterns from the beer garden, he added.

Man stood in pub

Thomas said his family had rallied to help him clear the damage, but he estimated it would cost him "a few thousand" to repair.

"It wasn't even worth doing," he said. "They've done more in damage than they've got.

"It's irritating, just as I've got the inside done ready. Now I need to go back in and do it all again."

Thomas told the BBC it was the second time the pub had been broken into since he took over in July.

The first time, he said, teenagers had smashed in to explore and film for TikTok.

"It's stressful, it's very stressful," Thomas said. "Everything in life has hurdles, and it tests everyone's strength.

"[But] if you want to open, you've just got to get on with it."

Pub exterior

Police said it believed two unknown offenders arrived at the pub in a small dark Transit van and then climbed on to the roof and into the boiler room.

They stole copper pipes from the boiler, causing it to leak, before making off in the van, the force added.
