A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a body was discovered in Alderney, police have said.

Emergency services including an RNLI lifeboat were called to an area known as The Guns where a woman was found dead in the early hours of Monday, Guernsey Police said.

A 44-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder and was being treated in hospital while in police custody, the force said.

Det Supt Jonathan Bancroft said police were not looking for anyone further "at this time" but emergency services would be "highly visible" in the island for the rest of the day.

Formal identification of the body has not yet taken place, Det Supt Bancroft said.

"This is a fast moving investigation so we would ask the public to refrain from speculation while initial inquiries are completed," he said.

The most northerly of the Channel Islands, Alderney has a population of about 2,200.

It was occupied by the Germans in 1940 and The Guns forms part of a major military fortification and gun emplacement site on its western coast.

Battery Annes features four prominent concrete coast artillery emplacements, personnel shelters and reserve ammunition bunkers, according to Visit Alderney.

Anyone with information that could assist the investigation was asked to contact police.
