Familiar face set to return to Etihad Stadium

Manchester City take on Paris Saint-Germain this evening on matchday two of the league phase of the Champions League. Enzo Maresca’s side are undefeated so far this term, in what has been a perfect start to the Italian’s tenure at the Etihad Stadium. He took over the reins from his former boss Pep Guardiola, who over the summer stepped down after ten years of service, including 20 trophies.

The Spaniard will be back tonight, but only in a spectating capacity, with one of the Etihad’s stands named after the club’s former manager. City play at home for the first time since an independent commission ruled a guilty verdict on 114 of their 115 charges for financial breaches, although an appeal process is in motion as the club pleads its innocence.

They take on a Paris side that has won this competition twice in a row, defeating Arsenal last season on penalties after a tense 1-1 draw in Budapest. The Ligue 1 outfit are sixth in France’s top flight after a stuttering start to the campaign, but the European stage is where they often do their best work. Live updates

Thorn in Premier League's side...

Paris could become just the second team to go more than ten consecutive games against English sides in the European Cup/UEFA Champions League without losing.

The Ligue 1 side are currently unbeaten in nine, winning seven and drawing two against English outfits.

Real Madrid’s record of 11 is the longest - spanning 2011 and 2017.

Half an hour to kick-off

Here are the two teams once more for those that missed them:

Donnarumma; Khusanov, Dias, Guehi, Gvardiol; Anderson, Fernandez; Semenyo, Cherki, Doku; Haaland

: Safonov; Hakimi, Marquinhos, Pacho, Mendes; Vitinha, Zaire-Emery, Ruiz; Akliouche, Dembele, Doue

Haaland to make history?

If he scores in this match, Erling Haaland will overtake Sergio Aguero (36 goals in 64 apps) to become City’s top scorer in the UEFA Champions League.

The Norwegian has 36 goals in 40 games.

A decent run...

Paris are unbeaten in their last 11 games in the UEFA Champions League - they have won seven and drawn four - only once having a longer run without defeat in the competition: 13 matches between October 2012 and November 2013.

Ninth meeting this evening

This will be the ninth meeting between City and Paris, with the Citizens winning four of the previous eight (D2 L2) and going unbeaten in the four matches they have hosted (W3 D1).

Big news on the continent!

Vinicius Junior has been handed a four-game ban in La Liga for hair-pulling and aggressive behaviour towards the referee.

The Real Madrid star will miss the first ‘Clasico’ of the season as a result.

And for Paris...

As expected. Enrique has rung the changes, but Kvaratskhelia is the surprise omission, with the Georgian on the bench.

A chance for Akliouche to show his stuff, while Mendes and Dembele come straight back in at left-back and up front respectively.

Big calls for City

Maresca has decided to go for Khusanov at right-back, rather than Nunes. A big decision from the Italian.

Otherwise, it’s as you were from Anfield, but with Doku in for Ndiaye for a bit of pace.

: Safonov; Hakimi, Marquinhos, Pacho, Mendes; Vitinha, Zaire-Emery, Ruiz; Akliouche, Dembele, Doue

: Chevalier, Beraldo, Zabarnyi, Hernandez, Digne, Neves, D. Fernandez, Kvaratskhelia, Torres, Godts, Ndjantou

Donnarumma; Khusanov, Dias, Guehi, Gvardiol; Anderson, Fernandez; Semenyo, Cherki, Doku; Haaland

: Bettinelli, Rulli, Ndiaye, Kovačić, Aït-Nouri, Reis, Nunes, Bouaddi, O'Reilly, Allan, Foden, Lewis
