A man has appeared in court charged with the attempted murder of a welfare officer at a hotel used to house asylum seekers.

Abdifatah Yusuf Adani, 22, is alleged to have stabbed the staff member five times with a large kitchen knife at the Stanwell Hotel in Surrey, near Heathrow Airport, at about 18:30 BST on Saturday.

Adani appeared at Staines Magistrates' Court earlier and communicated via a Somali translator. The lead magistrate confirmed Adani had entered the UK illegally via a small boat.

He has been remanded into custody and is due to appear at Guildford Crown Court on 17 September.
