Man rescued alive after 15 days trapped in pitch-black underwater cave

A fisherman was saved after spending nearly half a month in a underwater sinkhole.

Erasto Crisanto Valdez disappeared for 15 days in a cenote in San Fransisco La Paz, a small rural community in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca.

Mr Valdez, 31, had joined his father on a fishing expedition on July 23 before he suddenly vanished.

He was finally discovered dehydrated and with severe malnutrition in a cave more than 300 ft deep on August 7.

He described his rescue as a ‘marvellous miracle’.

‘Thank you God for giving me another opportunity in life and allowing me to see my children and my family’, he told Nmas.

Story from Jam Press (Trapped Fisherman Rescued) Pictured: Video Grab: Erasto recovering in hospital. VIDEO: Fisherman, 31, rescued alive after 15 days trapped in underwater cave A 31-year-old fisherman has been rescued alive after spending 15 days missing in a water-filled sinkhole. Erasto Crisanto Valdez disappeared while fishing with his father in a cenote in San Francisco La Paz, Mexico, on 23 July. A cenote is a deep natural well or sinkhole formed by the collapse of surface limestone, exposing groundwater beneath. A search operation began immediately, but initial searches in the water yielded no results. The depth of the cenote and the difficult conditions at the site made it challenging to locate Erasto. Six days later, on 29 July, divers taking part in the operation found the harpoon he had been carrying. It was discovered at a depth of approximately 65m (213ft) in the cenote, as reported by NeedToKnow. On Thursday (6 August), 15 days after Erasto disappeared, explorers from Mexico, Germany, the US and the Dominican Republic finally managed to locate him. Remarkably, he was alive, reportedly trapped in a cave with an air pocket more than 100m (328ft) below the surface. Mexican explorer Carlos Jim?nez described the discovery as a miracle. He told local media: ?We were prepared to find his body. But God had other plans.? Erasto was then brought to the surface on a stretcher. He would have faced cold, humidity, darkness and exhaustion during his time in the cave. Suffering from severe dehydration and malnutrition after spending more than two weeks without access to food, he was taken by ambulance for medical treatment. He is now recovering in hospital in his hometown of Uxpanapa. ENDS EDITOR?S NOTES: Quotations have been translated to English. Mr Valdez explained that he got stuck in the pitch black cave while attempting to catch a robalo, a common snook.

He said that he drank, slept and prayed in the total darkness and completely lost his sense of time given the complete absence of daylight.

Explorers from MexicoGermany, the US and the Dominican Republic joined the search, which took place under challenging conditions including poor visibility.

Among those involved was American cave-diving instructor Harry Gust, who believed he was on a mission to recover a body.

The diver, based in Tulum, luckily found a spare air tank some 100 metres inside the cave, after 75 minutes searching underwater.

‘I could not see him but assured him that I was coming back for him with more help’, he told Divernet.

Thousands of underwater cenotes exist on Mexico’s Yucatán peninsular, which were historically used by Mayan communities for water and sacrificial offerings.
