A watchdog has launched an investigation after a man suffered life-changing injuries following a police shooting.

Shots were fired by armed officers at a property in Cardigan Street, Luton, at about 12:50 BST on Tuesday.

Bedfordshire Police said it was responding to reports that a man was threatening a woman with a knife at the address. She had suffered a stab wound.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) was investigating the police response, it added.

Neither the man's nor the woman's injuries were life-threatening, and both were being treated at hospital, a police spokesman said.

Det Ch Supt Zara Brown said officers "responded quickly" to the unfolding incident.

"As part of this response, shots were fired by police, and one man sustained serious injuries," she continued.

"Immediate first aid was provided, and he has been taken to hospital, where he remains under police watch."

The force pledged to provide further information about the IOPC investigation when possible.
