A man has been jailed for life after walking into a police station and confessing to his involvement in a murder more than 30 years ago.

Robert Lloyd, 53, admitted his part in the killing of 26-year-old Michael McDermott in Moston, Manchester, in November 1994.

Lloyd was part of a group of masked men armed with baseball bats and knives who attacked Michael at a relative’s home in Ashville Terrace.

The gang burst through the front door at around 10.30pm on November 9 and attacked Michael while he lay on a sofa.

Michael suffered several injuries, including stab wounds, during the assault.

Greater Manchester Police’s (GMP) major investigation team reopened the case last October after Lloyd came forward and confessed.

Reporting restrictions were placed on the case while police inquiries continued, but those restrictions were lifted by a judge on Monday.

Detectives are now working to identify the other people involved in Michael’s killing.

Detective Inspector Rachel Smith, from GMP’s major investigation team, said: ‘Michael’s death 30 years ago was devastating for his loved ones and has left unanswered questions ever since.

‘Whilst our investigation into this attack continues, it is my hope that Michael’s family feels a sense of reassurance and peace after this sentencing.

‘Our investigation into the circumstances of Michael’s tragic death are very much active and I urge anyone with information to please come forward. I can assure you, it’s not too late.’
