Michael Carrick has eased injury fears over Mason Mount following Manchester United’s pre-season friendly against Paris Saint-Germain.

Mount started Saturday’s high-profile contest in Gothenburg but limped off after only 20 minutes with what initially looked like a potential foot issue.

The former Chelsea midfielder did not appear to be moving well and was seen in discussion with multiple members of Man Utd’s medical staff on the sidelines before he headed straight down the tunnel at Ullevi Stadium.

The sight of Mount - who was replaced by teenage midfielder Tyler Fletcher - heading off early caused significant concern among supporters, with the 27-year-old having endured a torrid time with injuries since arriving at Old Trafford in 2023.

However, United boss Carrick has now insisted that the substitution was merely precautionary after Mount was on the receiving end of a strong challenge, with the player seen moving freely and without any limp as he exited the venue in Sweden in video footage that has circulated on social media.

“He got kicked,” Carrick said. “We just wanted to be careful and look after him. We've been lucky with injuries so far, so we wanted to be careful.”

United’s injury woes got worse in the second half of a 1-1 draw with reigning European and French champions PSG, in which Bryan Mbeumo scored his third goal in two games following strong work from Amad Diallo to cancel out a second-minute tap-in from Liverpool transfer target Ibrahim Mbaye.

Veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton sustained a hamstring injury after racing out to make a clearance and received treatment on the pitch but could not continue as he was replaced by Dermot Mee.

United already had a shortage of goalkeepers for their latest pre-season friendly, with first-choice stopper Senne Lammens now back from his post-World Cup holiday but left behind at Carrington this weekend along with Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha, with both players recovering from what were described by the club as “minor non-related illnesses”.

Lammens’ former deputy Altay Bayindir joined Spanish club Celta Vigo on Friday on an initial season-long loan that includes the option for a permanent transfer next summer, while on Saturday morning Radek Vitek completed a switch to Championship side Middlesbrough worth up to £14m.

Free agent signing Karl Darlow - who has arrived to replace Bayindir as Lammens’ No2 - remains unavailable for selection following a minor procedure undergone during the latter stages of last season at Leeds.

With no Lammens, Darlow, Bayindir or Vitek, teenager Fred Heath joined Mee as the back-ups to the 40-year-old Heaton in Gothenburg, where United also remained without Benjamin Sesko, Matthijs de Ligt and Manuel Ugarte plus Kobbie Mainoo, Marcus Rashford and Lisandro Martinez, with the latter trio set to return from their post-World Cup breaks during a training camp in the Republic of Ireland.

Youri Tielemans made his United debut off the bench against PSG, with captain Bruno Fernandes also making his first appearance of pre-season alongside Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot.
