Manchester United injury update: Amad Diallo, Marcus Rashford, Luke Shaw latest news and return dates

Two returnees expected for midweek action
Michael Carrick to remain in charge at Manchester United

Manchester United’s winless run extended to nine matches on Saturday afternoon as they were beaten 2-0 at Chelsea, but the club’s injury situation did improve slightly.

Kobbie Mainoo made a long-awaited return to the squad, calling time on a weeks-long absence with a muscular problem. He came off the bench in the second half to formalise his return to action but could not affect a comeback as Lisandro Martinez was sent off, leaving his team-mates fighting an uphill battle.

Unfortunately for United, though, Marcus Rashford and Luke Shaw remained absent, with an important Champions League match against Roma to come on Tuesday.

With that in mind, here is all the latest Manchester United injury news and potential return dates...

Amad Diallo got the nod at Stamford Bridge and enjoyed a lively first-half before being forced off shortly before full-time.

He went down off the ball and received treatment before being replaced by Joshua Zirkzee. It appeared he had picked up a muscular issue of some description.

Carrick did not offer an update on his condition at full-time, suggesting his issue is not serious.

Potential return date:

There was optimism Marcus Rashford would be fit to face Chelsea on Saturday, but he was again left out of the matchday squad.

He has been struggling with a hip issue since early October but has returned to team training and seems to be closing in on a comeback.

Potential return date:

Luke Shaw may be approaching a return from the mysterious “knock” which has left him sidelined since United drew 1-1 with Tottenham earlier this month.

Carrick has previously used Mainoo as a yardstick to estimate his return, saying Shaw’s recovery would be longer than the midfielder’s, but by how much is not clear.

With Mainoo now fit again, though, Shaw may be approaching a return to the pitch.

Potential return date:

Benjamin Sesko is facing an extended absence with the same shin injury which he picked up in spring and delayed his first appearance of this campaign.

He returned to the pitch in late August and appeared to be back at full fitness before reaggravating the issue.

It is understood he is now facing months out as United look to help him recover fully from the injury, with a return pencilled in for January.

“Yeah, not so positive unfortunately with Ben, he's going to be out for a period of time,” Carrick said before the trip to Chelsea. “We're not exactly sure yet how long, but it's going to be a significant amount of time, unfortunately.

“So I feel for Ben, he had the issue at the end of last season that we looked after and tried to give him as much time to recover and then unfortunately he's had the issue coming into this season.

“So, we've got to do what's best for Ben and he's going to have to have some time on the sidelines, unfortunately.

“It's not great for us, it's certainly not great for Ben, but it is part of the game and we've just got to try and make the best of it and get him back as quick as we can.”

Potential return date:

Patrick Dorgu suffered a hamstring injury while representing Denmark during the first international break of the season. It appeared a serious problem, and he immediately returned to Carrington for rehabilitation.

Speaking in early October, Carrick said the full-back was facing “a number of weeks” on the sidelines. No further update on his recovery has recently been issued.

Potential return date:

Manuel Ugarte remains sidelined after suffering a serious knee ligament injury while representing Uruguay at the World Cup.

He underwent surgery shortly thereafter and is expected to miss most if not all of the 2026/27 campaign.
