Michael Carrick will hope to welcome some fresh faces back into his Manchester United squad as he looks to inspire an upturn in form after the international break.

Sunday’s draw at Fulham meant the Red Devils head off to represent their nations with just one win in their last five.

There was some positive news on the day despite the dour performance. Luke Shaw recovered from a knock to start, while Mason Mount also got some minutes under his belt.

But that was all overshadowed by Benjamin Sesko’s absence after he reaggravated the shin injury which kept him sidelined for the early stages of the campaign.

With a must-win match against Tottenham on the cards in three weeks time, Carrick will hope to have as strong a squad as possible at his disposal.

Carlos Baleba, the £70m summer signing from Brighton, is still eagerly awaiting his competitive debut, which is now likely little more than three weeks away.

The Cameroon international arrived in Manchester with an ankle injury but has returned to training and was named to a matchday squad for the first time when United visited Fulham this weekend.

The coming international break will give him time to build up an understanding with his team-mates and improve his fitness, and he will hope to make his competitive bow when the Premier League reconvenes next month.

Benjamin Sesko is once again sidelined after aggravating the shin injury which saw him miss the end of last season and the early days of this one.

The Slovenian was injured when Liverpool visited Old Trafford back in May and saw the opening days of the new campaign hampered as he continued to recover, failing to start a match until facing Sabah in the Champions League.

The injury has reared its head again, though, and the striker was forced to skip the trip to Fulham.

Speaking at full-time, Carrick explained: “It was a pain in his shin.

“We’re not sure with him yet. He felt a bit of pain after the game. We’re assessing him. He definitely wasn’t ready for today.”

It remains to be seen how long he will take to recover, though United will hope he is fit to return after the international break.

Potential return date:

Amad Diallo is yet to appear for United this season after suffering an ankle injury in the latter stages of pre-season, and it was reported at the time he could be sidelined for up to six weeks.

There has been no clear update on his prognosis since before the midweek defeat to Brighton, though, when Carrick said his recovery was still a question of weeks rather than days.

He was consequently absent for the trip to Fulham, and will hope to step up his recovery during this extended international break.

Matthijs de Ligt has not played competitive football for Man United since November 2025, when he picked up a lower back injury against Crystal Palace.

It was initially described as minor by then-manager Ruben Amorim, but he has since been forced to undergo surgery on the issue, which saw him miss the Netherlands’ World Cup campaign.

He is finally thought to be closing in on a return to play, but travelled with the squad for Sunday’s draw with Fulham. He was not named to the matchday squad, though.

In any case, it suggests he is close to a return, and will hope to be in contention after three more weeks off.

Manuel Ugarte has undergone surgery on a ruptured ACL sustained at the World Cup earlier this summer.

He is now in a period of rehabilitation at Carrington and is expected to miss most of this season.
