Manchester United boss Michael Carrick has provided an insight to Youri Tielemans and Kobbie Mainoo’s substitutions, ahead of this weekend’s showdown against Manchester City.

Both Tielemans and Mainoo started Man United’s 4-0 win over Sabah on Thursday night, the former providing the assist for Bruno Fernandes to double the lead shortly before half-time.

However, with Benjamin Sesko adding a third prior to the break to leave United in a commanding position, Tielemans did not reappear for the second half as he was replaced by Mason Mount.

Meanwhile, Mainoo made way for Andrey Santos just after the hour mark.

Speaking to TNT Sports after Man Utd’s statement win on their return to the Champions League, Carrick revealed both changes were made to get Santos and Mount some minutes.

“It's nice as well to be able to get Andrey [Santos] and Mason [Mount] on for the second half,” Carrick said.

The United head coach may have dropped a hint over his team selection for the Manchester derby on Sunday as Marcus Rashford, Diogo Dalot and Harry Maguire were all unused substitutes at Old Trafford.

Luke Shaw, though, is a doubt after being left out of the matchday squad altogether after sustaining a knock in the 2-2 draw away at Everton last weekend.

"It's a little bit of that [managing him]," Carrick told TNT Sports prior to kick-off. "He came off the other day [at Everton] with a little bit of cramp. We didn't want to take any risks really.

"We tried to manage him so we will see how he is after this one."
