Michael Carrick has made a rather surprising claim about Manchester United’s start to the Premier League season, following the 2-2 draw against Everton.

Man United were seconds away from snatching a win over the Toffees on Sunday afternoon, as Benjamin Sesko climbed off the bench to restore the lead with two minutes plus stoppage time to play.

However, Ainsley Maitland-Niles would have the final say as he marked his Everton debut with a stunning strike from distance to snatch a dramatic late point and spark bedlam inside the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The result means the Red Devils have taken four points from a possible nine from their opening three games of the new Premier League campaign.

Though, despite facing two of the promoted teams and an Everton side weakened after a disappointing summer transfer window, Carrick insists United have not made a bad start.

"We haven't started the season that bad, to be honest," he told reporters.

"It's not that bad, you know. We were that close to coming away with three points today. That's football, little moments that we can deal with a bit better, but we'll be fine.

"We're disappointed, bitterly disappointed to be in the position we were in the game twice, so close to the end," said Carrick.

"All the work that went into putting us in that position at different stages to then come away like that leaves us... yeah, it's not a great feeling, so, it feels like a defeat.

"It's a bit of a cliché, it's the obvious thing to say at this stage, but we have taken a point. We can't ignore that, but it feels that we should have had a lot more."
