Match of the Day viewers believe Mark Chapman is back to his best a week on from concerns over his demeanor hosting the BBC's show.
Chapman’s subdued appearance last week while presenting the BBC's flagship Premier League highlights show attracted attention on social media, with some viewers questioning his unusually flat delivery and perceived lack of enthusiasm.
X user Charlie Whalsham wrote at the time: "Just look at the way Mark Chapman opens the show. Flat. Lifeless. Almost uninterested.
"Football is about passion, enthusiasm, banter, anger, love, joy and despair. Yet the BBC has somehow managed to package its highlights into a programme almost entirely devoid of emotion."
The post added: "Everything is so painfully serious. The pundits deliver their analysis within such tight parameters that the whole thing feels sterile."
Chapman's demeanor prompted speculation over his happiness in the job, and reports soon followed suggesting that the situation behind the scenes may have contributed to the change in his presenting style.
Chapman before the season became one of the main presenters of Match of the Day at the start of the 2025-26 season, following Gary Lineker’s departure. He shares the role with Gabby Logan and rumoured romantic partner Kelly Cates.
The Daily Mail has recently reported that Chapman has been left unhappy with developments behind the scenes at the broadcaster, who have categorically denied the claims.
A BBC spokesperson told the Daily Express: “Both Mark and Alex [Kay-Jelski, Director of BBC Sport] are explicit there was no 'falling out' or disagreement.
"Furthermore, Alex had absolutely no involvement whatsoever in the selection of pundits for last week’s Match of the Day, so the suggestion that could have caused any angst is entirely false. There is no truth to this story whatsoever and the 'sources' alleging any of this happened are, sadly, lying.”
But Chapman cut a far more cheerful and animated figure on Saturday night, a week on from speculation over his mood and temperment, and Walsham returned to the topic to give "credit where credit's due."
Walsham posted on Saturday night: "‘Chappers’ was much better this week. He displayed some of the personality he regularly brings to the radio, and it made viewing the programme so much more enjoyable.
"If he’s having a laugh with the pundits and seems to be enjoying himself, it’s much easier to watch."
Another X user agreed, posting "much more like himself thankfully" as another reply read: "Hopefully it was just an off day for him. Always thought he was the best candidate for the job. And edged it from the girls with his sense of humour which always stood out on MOTD2."
