Met Police confirms it received letter detailing claims about Meghan’s father

The Metropolitan Police has revealed it did not share information about “alleged offending outside the UK” by Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex’s father with other law enforcement agencies after confirming it did receive a letter detailing a number of claims against him.

Authorities in the Philippines are investigating allegations that Thomas Markle Sr, 82, possessed a hoard of child sex abuse images. He strongly denies the allegations.

In a statement, the Met Police confirmed it did receive a letter containing claims about the Duchess’s father which it sent to the MPS Protection Command to raise concerns about Meghan’s safety.

It is now exploring whether it should refer itself to the police watchdog over how it handled the matter.

This comes a day after the Duchess of Sussex said she had been made aware of “disturbing allegations” about her father in 2018 and that a letter had been sent to the Metropolitan Police and Royalty and Specialist Protection which was shared with her.

Police said yesterday they were making internal inquiries into the matter.

In a statement issued today, a Met Police spokesperson said: “Following a thorough review of Met Police systems and records, we have confirmed that in January 2019, we received a letter containing a number of claims about alleged offending outside the United Kingdom. It was sent to the MPS Protection Command to raise concerns in relation to the security of the Duchess of Sussex.

“The letter was reviewed and a decision was made that it should be passed to the office of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex for their awareness. The details of the allegations in the letter were not shared with other law enforcement agencies.

“The MPS is reviewing the handling of this matter in 2019 and considering whether a referral to the IOPC is necessary to review our approach.”

The Duchess said on Friday that a 2018 letter made “troubling and disturbing allegations against my father and I was given assurances that these were being investigated”.

She issued the statement after reported Meghan’s half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr, alleged that he found a stash of images belonging to their father at his former home in the Philippines.

Meghan’s father moved to the southeast Asian country in 2025 after suffering a series of strokes. But he is currently based in the US.

Thomas Markle Jr reportedly told police in the Philippines that he discovered the child abuse pictures and videos mixed up with innocent family mementos.

said he also contacted FBI investigators in the US in July.

The FBI said in a statement that it is “aware of the allegations and will provide support, as appropriate, to the Philippine authorities”.

It also said it will “also investigate any related allegations of federal ‌violations of US law”.

This is a breaking news story and it is being updated.
