Shocking doorbell footage has shown the moment a teenager smashes into a front garden, seriously injuring a 74-year-old man.

Mohammed Khan, 18, can be seen speeding down a street in a Volkswagen Golf before he smashes into Peter Jeffree’s stationary car in Watford, Hertfordshire, on September 5 last year.

The clip shows Khan travelling at speed along Stratford Way before overtaking a red Mazda shortly before reaching the junction with Cassiobury Drive.

Just seconds later, a loud bang can be heard as Khan’s Golf crashes into Mr Jeffree’s yellow Reliant Scimitar GTE.

Another doorbell camera then captures the moment the Golf ploughs into a second car parked in a front garden.

Mr Jeffree suffered three fractured vertebrae, cracked ribs and a cracked sternum in the collision.

His classic car, which he had owned for more than 40 years, was also ‘completely destroyed’.

‘If I had anyone in my car, if my wife had been in the passenger seat and they had hit me in the middle of the car, we both could have been killed,’ Mr Jeffree said.

A court heard that the 18-year-old had been travelling at around 60mph in a 30mph residential area, with three friends in the car.

Khan had also overtaken another vehicle at speed before ‘shooting across the junction without any hesitation’ and crashing into Mr Jeffree’s car.

The driver, who was 17 at the time of the crash, was sentenced at St Albans Crown Court on Friday after pleading guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

He was handed a 19-month sentence at a Young Offenders’ Institution, suspended for three years.

Khan was also ordered to complete 250 hours of unpaid work and 15 days of rehabilitation activities.

On top of that, he was banned from driving for three years and must pass an extended driving test before getting back behind the wheel.

Prosecutor Nadine Mathurasangh told an earlier hearing: ‘At around 2pm in the afternoon the defendant was driving a red Volkswagen vehicle on Stratford Way.

‘He was seen to be driving at excessive speed. This was a 30mph zone and we’ve got a witness who says the approximate speed driven by the defendant was 60 to 70mph.’

As Khan approached the junction with Cassiobury Drive, he dangerously overtook the red Mazda on the offside, the court heard.

The woman driving the Mazda said Khan’s car then ‘shot across the junction without any hesitation’ before smashing into Mr Jeffree’s vehicle.

Both cars were sent spinning, with Khan’s Golf ending up in a front garden while Mr Jeffree’s Reliant came to rest in the road.

Defending, Amita Patel said Khan was remorseful and had written a ‘heartfelt’ letter of apology to Mr Jeffree.

In the letter, Khan wrote: ‘Since the accident I have thought about it a lot. I genuinely wish I could change what happened.’
