Moment ‘sexually fixated’ stepdad turns up at teen’s uni halls before ‘murdering her’

This is the moment a 19-year-old student let her ‘obsessed stepdad’ into her university accommodation before he strangled her in a sexually motivated killing, a court has heard.

Nathan Owens, 34, is said to have murdered stepdaughter Carla Georgescu after driving more than 100 miles through the night to her University of Lancashire campus in Preston on February 4.

Jurors at the city’s crown court have heard how Owens ‘had a wholly improper and dangerously entrenched sexual obsession with’ Carla.

They were told a fit of jealousy may have prompted the trip after Owens learned Carla was flying out to Romania the next day and had also made plans to see a man she had been speaking to online.

After parking his Ford Puma, Owens is recorded wrapping himself in a blanket as he knocks on the door of the University of Lancashire student accommodation, jurors heard.

Once inside, he momentarily glances up at the camera before following Carla into her room.

Over the next 90 minutes, he is alleged to have subjected her to ‘some form of grievous sexual activity’ which included strangulation and led to her death, which is being treated as murder.

His actions were ‘hardly surprising’ given the extent of Owens’ sexual obsession with his stepdaughter, Nicholas Lumley KC, for the prosecution, said.

Wearing a dressing gown and pyjamas, Carla Georgescu is recorded leaving her room and letting Nathan Owens into Ribble Hall at around 4am on February 4.

A subsequent post-mortem revealed she had suffered two heavy blows to her head, slash marks on her cheek and cuts and bruises to her mouth and nose, the jury heard.

Her hands were covered in blood because she attempted to defend herself during the attack, the court heard.

Sex toys and Owens’ DNA were also found at the scene, the trial heard.

When he left the accommodation, CCTV records Owens ‘shielding’ himself with an umbrella, wearing a face mask and Carla’s trainers, while carrying two bags, the court heard.

These bags may have contained Carla’s phone and laptop, which the prosecution allege he removed and dumped somewhere on the drive back to Hartlepool.

Prosecuting, Nicholas Lumley KC, said: ‘Her death was the culmination, the end point, of weeks, months and perhaps years of a one-sided sexual obsession.

‘And it was the beginning of a complex murder investigation, which led to his door in Hartlepool.

‘For it was he who was sexually fixated on Carla and it was he, Nathan Owens, who had killed Carla.’

He also told the jury how, in the months leading up to Carla’s murder, Owens had taken pictures of her without her knowledge and turned innocent selfies of her into sexual images.

Owens also filmed himself having sex with her dolls and toys, including a life-sized ‘effigy’ dressed in her nightie, the court heard.

The ‘only possible reason’ for looking at those images was his ‘wholly improper and dangerously entrenched sexual obsession with his stepdaughter’, he said.

After allegedly murdering Carla, Owens returned to Hartlepool, County Durham, where he was his ‘normal self’, according to Janina.

As he went for a walk and shopped at Asda, Carla’s body lay slumped against a wardrobe with a belt tied around her neck, jurors were told.

Her mother later raised the alarm when her daughter didn’t respond to calls or texts.

This led to her being found by police officers on what would have been her 20th birthday.

They then told her grieving mother that Carla was found hanged. She only learnt of Owens’ visit to Carla’s halls when she contacted the hospital mortuary, the trial heard.

Mr Lumley claims this is untrue and is an attempt to ‘cover his tracks’.

The court also heard that, in the weeks before her death, Carla was fit and well.

Owens denies murder, intentional strangulation and grievous bodily harm with intent.

The trial continues.
