Motorist caught driving car with missing tyre

An exposed wheel on a car without a tyre on it.

A motorist was arrested after catching the attention of police officers by driving a car with only three tyres.

Essex Police officers were on patrol close to the Generals Lane roundabout in Chelmsford on Friday when they heard a "loud, metal grinding noise".

After stopping the vehicle in Beaulieu Parkway, they found it had "been driven for some time" with one of its wheels missing a tyre.

The driver was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving and issued with a notice prohibiting the car being used on the road until the dangerous defect is repaired.

Ch Insp Sam Girdlestone said: "I know the vast majority of drivers in Essex would never, ever drive a vehicle in this condition on the road – but we do still see this sort of behaviour.

"It is extraordinarily dangerous, puts lives at risk, and we won't tolerate it."
