A number of people are dead and four have been taken to hospital after a car drove the wrong way along a motorway in Ireland.

Among the passengers injured in the crash in Co Kildare early this morning was a child, who remains in a serious condition in a Dublin children’s hospital.

Gardaí, the Irish police force, said the ‘head-on collision’ took place on the northbound stretch of the M9 road at around 3am.

Another woman in her 20s, who was a passenger in the rear seat, is also in a serious condition at St Luke’s General Hospital.

According to the Irish Mirror, the child who was hurt in the crash is a girl who suffered a broken leg.

The newspaper said the four people who were taken to hospital were in a car travelling to Dublin on the correct side of the road.

Fiosrú, the independent policing watchdog in Ireland, has announced it is also investigating the crash.

A spokesman said: ‘A referral does not necessarily mean a garda or gardaí have been accused of wrongdoing.

‘Instead, it means that Fiosrú should independently investigate the incident to ascertain whether or not the act or omission of a garda or gardaí may have resulted in the death of, or serious harm to, a person.’
