A murder investigation has begun after a man in his 30s was found with serious head injuries at a home in south London.

Officers were called by the London Fire Brigade to Poynders Road, Lambeth, at about 20:35 BST on Friday.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene despite the efforts of emergency services, the Metropolitan Police said.

His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

No arrests have been made and a crime scene remains in place while inquiries continue.

Det Ch Insp Alison Foxwell, who is leading the investigation, said: "This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are with the victim's family and loved ones as they come to terms with their loss.

"We are working hard to establish exactly what happened and a team of detectives is progressing a number of enquiries at pace.

"At this stage, we believe this was an isolated incident and there is no evidence to suggest any wider risk to the public."

She said residents could expect to see an increased police presence in the area, and appealed for anyone who saw or heard anything unusual to come forward.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said they were called to gain entry to the property.

"Upon gaining entry, firefighters discovered the body of a man in the property," they added.

"Despite the efforts of firefighters and paramedics, he was declared dead at the scene."
