A 12-day-old baby boy was killed after an avocado fell on his head outside a nursery in Argentina, his mother has said.
Baby Lucas was in his mother Guiliana Gomez’s arms while she dropped off her older son at school last week.
Suddenly, he was struck on the head by a falling avocado from a tree outside the nursery in Quilmes, Buenos Aires.
The infant began screaming, and parents panicked, calling emergency services. 20 minutes later, an ambulance arrived but did not have the right equipment to help baby Lucas, a witness said.
‘Lucas wasn’t bleeding, but he writhed and suddenly started crying. That’s when his mother realised what had happened and almost fainted. I had to hold the baby,’ the witness said.
Lucas suffered multiple skull fractures after the avocado, which weighed more than a kilo, hit his head from a height of more than 30 feet.

Lucas was rushed to the hospital where he underwent surgery and was placed in intensive care before dying days later.
His mother has since blamed the local council for not pruning the tree, which has been growing near the nursery for more than a year.
Ms Gomez said: ‘They didn’t come to prune the tree beforehand to prevent this.
‘They’ve been asking for it to be cut down since 2025.’
Ms Gomez said that after Lucas died, the council cut down the tree ‘in secret’.
She added: ‘There had already been a complaint from a father who was knocked unconscious by an avocado. Other children were nearly hit by one.’
The grieving mother said the local government referenced a psychologist to speak to her after her newborn’s death.
Still, she said: ‘No one else called me. They’re going to have to take responsibility.’
The local prosecutor is investigating the death.
