A man has died following a reported explosion on a residential street in Rotherham.

Emergency services, including three fire engines, rushed to Clifton Mount at about 1.20pm on Tuesday after locals reported a 'massive bang'.

A man was sadly found deceased and a probe has been launched into the cause of the blast.

Gas distributor Cadent Gas has reportedly said the reported explosion was 'not an issue related to our gas network'.

Police confirmed that there initially appears to be no further risk to the wider community, with the area temporarily cordoned off while enquiries took place.

A Tactical Support Group van was seen at the scene alongside eight police cars this afternoon, with reports of scientific support officers also attending. 

One local said 'I was walking through Clifton Park, sounded like a bomb had gone off' while another added they 'heard an explosion go off' from a few streets away.

One man said he heard the 'massive bang' from over a kilometre away while he was at the McDonald's in Rotherham. 

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said: 'Crews were called at 1.18pm today (September 29) to reports of an explosion on Clifton Mount, in Rotherham.

'Three fire engines from Rotherham and Tankersley fire stations attended and made the scene safe alongside partner agencies. Crews left the scene at 4:08pm.

'The cause of the explosion is currently under investigation.'

South Yorkshire Police told the Rotherham Advertiser: 'At 1.18pm today (September 29) we were alerted by the fire service of reports of an explosion on Clifton Mount, in Rotherham.

'Emergency services attended and a man was sadly found deceased. 

'In collaboration with South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Services, enquiries are ongoing to confirm the cause of the explosion.

'Initial enquiries indicate that there is no risk to the wider community. Clifton Mount was closed but has since been reopened.'

Cadent Gas told the BBC: 'First and foremost, our thoughts go out to the loved ones of the individual who has lost their life in tragic circumstances.

'Cadent's role on site has been to support the emergency services as best we possibly can, and we will continue to do that.'
