Labour MPs, ministers and members swapped politics for pop with a surprise performance from the Sugababes on the final night of the party’s conference.

The girlband headlined the TikTok and UK Music event at Camp and Furnace in Liverpool.

Mutya Buena, Keisha Buchanan and Siobhán Donaghy expressed their surprise at the rowdiness of the crowd.

Buchanan joked: “We didn’t know what to expect. You know when it’s a corporate [gig] and you think it’s going to be like ‘oh my boss is here’. Well not round here.”

Following the pop trio’s set, AI minister Mr Narayan got behind the decks for the Labour student disco.

Mayor of West Yorkshire Tracy Brabin and Islington South MP Emily Thornberry also hosted DJ sets.

The event was held after Andy Burnham gave his keynote speech at his first Labour Party as Prime Minister on Tuesday.

He laid out his plan for the country, covering care, pensions, housing, welfare, electoral reform, energy and water.

The pensions triple lock will be scrapped from 2030 to help pay for the Government’s social care plans, were among the controversial proposals announced.

On Wednesday, Mr Burnham warned the Treasury does not have “huge room for manoeuvre” as Chancellor John Healey draws up his first Budget.

Asked whether people should “expect to be better-off” after next month’s Budget, Andy Burnham told BBC Breakfast: “We’re thinking all of the time, ‘how do we take a bit of pressure off people, give them some breathing space?’

“It’s why one of the first decisions I took as Prime Minister was to remove VAT off electricity bills, and that will happen on Thursday.”

Mr Burnham said the measure was “something, it’s not everything”.

He continued: “We’ll do something to help people with bus fares next year, the £2 cap for the whole of the year, and then in the Budget we will consider further measures.

“It’s important for me to say that we don’t have huge room for manoeuvre.”
