Pink Floyd co-founder Syd Barrett honoured by hometown football club

Pink Floyd co-founder Syd Barrett has been honoured with a special edition shirt designed by his family and hometown football club Cambridge United, to raise money for local mental health charities.
The musician, real name Roger Keith Barrett, formed the chart-topping group in the 1960s alongside Roger Waters, Nick Mason and Rick Wright.
Barrett, who left the group in 1968 amid struggles with his mental health and substance abuse, had a big impact on Pink Floyd and inspired later songs such as Wish You Were Here.

He died aged 60 in 2006 after developing pancreatic cancer, but his musical legacy lives on through genre-defining records including The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn, along with his success as a soloist.
Barrett, who was born in Cambridge, has been honoured with a commemorative shirt in an initiative to support local mental health charities.
It was created in collaboration with Barrett’s family and was inspired by his life and art, with a diamond pattern running across the shirt as a nod to Pink Floyd’s track dedicated to the star, Shine On You Crazy Diamond.
The design also features an emblem bearing his name and the years of his life, while the colour scheme takes inspiration from the striped floorboards featured on the cover of his solo album The Madcap Laughs.
The shirts will be worn by Cambridge United’s first team for their game against Blackpool on Saturday, which is World Mental Health Day, and the match-worn shirts will be auctioned by the club at a later date.

The shirts are also available for fans to buy, with a proportion of sales and auction proceeds to be donated to mental health charities.
Barrett’s sister Rosemary Breen said: “We are delighted and honoured to collaborate with Cambridge United on this initiative which helps highlight World Mental Health Day through the legacy of Syd.
“I am looking forward to coming to the match with other members of the family on Saturday.”
Alex Tunbridge, chief executive of Cambridge United, added: “Syd Barrett’s music continues to inspire devoted fans around the world, but his roots are here in Cambridge.
“We’re proud to honour his legacy with a shirt designed alongside his family, bringing together the city’s football and music communities on World Mental Health Day.
“We hope supporters and Syd’s fans will embrace the tribute and help us raise funds for mental health charities across Cambridgeshire.”
