Police car left wedged over sea after pier crash

A police car has ploughed through the railings of a pier on the Isle of Wight.

The Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary car went through the railings on Ryde Pier shortly before 10:10 BST and has been left wedged in place.

The force said the police car had crashed with another vehicle and had been responding to an incident at the time. It said no one had been injured. The fire service said two people who were trapped in the car were rescued by firefighters.

Access to the pier remains closed for both vehicles and pedestrians. The Wightlink Portsmouth Harbour to Ryde Pier Head FastCat service has also been suspended.

A small digger is being used to lift a damaged police car that has crashed through the railings of a pier. It is daytime and a number of people in hi-viz clothing are stood around the vehicle.

In a statement Wightlink said: "A structural safety assessment will now take place before the vehicle can be safely removed.

"Customers with vehicles parked at the end of Ryde Pier will not be issued with parking tickets while the pier remains closed.

"We apologise for the disruption and will continue to keep customers updated."

A team, accompanied by police and firefighters, were seen using a small digger to lift the police car from its position at about 15:00.
