Police have discharged a baton round during an incident in which a man barricaded himself inside a property in Londonderry.

Officers attended an address in the Argyle Street area of the city at about 22:45 BST on Sunday to make an arrest following a report of a serious assault earlier that day.

Police said a 31-year-old man, who was found to have sustained a number of wounds, barricaded himself inside a property and began throwing items from a window.

Due to an ongoing concern for his safety, as well as the safety of members of the public who had gathered nearby, officers discharged one attenuating energy projectile (AEP) - commonly known as a baton round - during the operation.

The man was then arrested on suspicion of a number of offences, including non-fatal strangulation, possession of an offensive weapon with intent, threats to kill and false imprisonment.

The 31-year-old remains in custody while enquiries continue.

The Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland has been informed, as is normal procedure when an AEP is discharged, police said.
