The officer approached a man and a woman at around 4.50am today when the shooting happened.
Both suspects fled the scene and have yet to be found as they are currently on the run.
A firearm has since been recovered, while a large police cordon remains in place in Angel Row.
Assistant Chief Constable Claire Rukas, of Nottinghamshire Police, described the incident as a ‘shocking’ reminder of the dangers officers face while on duty.
