Princess of Wales' sister told to remove car park

The Princess of Wales' sister and brother-in-law have been told to get rid of a "visually intrusive" car park which a council refused permission for.

The area for up to six cars was built west of Station Road to help with the estate's management and for anglers using the River Kennet nearby.

But West Berkshire Council refused to give it retrospective planning permission in February and an appeal was rejected by the Planning Inspectorate last month.

The council said the hardstanding, along with fencing and parked cars, had a negative impact on the North Wessex Downs National Landscape and on the rural area.

It said "great weight" had to be given to conserve and enhance its "landscape and scenic beauty".

Planning inspector Alexander O'Doherty agreed and said the car park "introduced a visually intrusive and urbanised feature into an otherwise open meadow".

O'Doherty said it had "eroded a measure of the open and undeveloped rural character" of the area.

A planning inquiry held over a proposed public footpath through the estate is expected to conclude within weeks.
