'Rare opportunity' to buy land including Zip World and two power stations

A huge estate featuring an outdoor adventure park, a hotel and historic quarries, set within Eryri National Park, is on the market.

The 1,900-acre site covers the Ffestiniog and Llechwedd quarries in the historic slate mining town of Blaenau Ffestiniog in Gwynedd, and also includes two hydroelectric power stations.

Property advisers Christie & Co began advertising the north Wales heritage estate, which forms part of the UNESCO Slate Landscape of Northwest Wales, on Thursday. The company did not reveal the asking price.

Jonathan Watson, director for investments at Christie & Co, said: "From an investment perspective, opportunities of this nature are exceptionally rare."

The freehold estate is located in the mountains of Eryri National Park, also known as Snowdonia, and was established in 1836.

The site includes Zip World in Llechwedd - an outdoor adventure park featuring zip wires and underground caverns - one of eight such locations across Wales and England.

The estate covers approximately 250 historic chambers and 25 miles of underground tunnels, Northern Welsh Quarries, downhill mountain bike centre Antur Stiniog and a specialist cheese storage operation.

According to the sales information, the land generates about £645,000 in rental income annually; Zip World operates as a protected tenant on the site, with a current lease locked in and legally guaranteed until 2056.

A white and grey stone, three-storey, building, in a tudor style, with tables and seating outside, and trees behind.

Alastair Altham, the company's chairman and a descendant of the family who founded the site, said he was "immensely proud" of the business but that "new capital" was needed for expansion.
