Renfrew Bridge to close 'for months' after Storm Boelo damage

The Renfrew Bridge, which opened to road traffic across the River Clyde last year, will be closed for "a number of months" due to repair work required following Storm Boelo.

Renfrewshire Council said electrical systems that operate the bridge suffered serious water damage at the weekend, with extensive damage in one of the bridge's two operating plant rooms.

The bridge, which will close at 20:00, links Renfrew with Yoker and Clydebank on the north bank of the River Clyde, and is a route often used to reach the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

The council said it is legally obligated to keep the Clyde open to river traffic, meaning the swing bridge will now remain in an open position.

The bridge opened in May last year as part of a £117m project to improve connectivity and regenerate waterfront areas.

The council said the damage affected electronic systems that control the hydraulics on the Renfrew side of the bridge.

The authority's head of climate, public protection and roads, Gerard Hannah, said work was under way to assess the full circumstances and restore the full function of the bridge.

He said: "We're very sorry for the inconvenience this will cause all those who use the bridge.

"We have two operating rooms, one on each side of the river, which manage the opening and closing of the bridge.

"While one side suffered minimal impact from the high-water levels, the plant on the Renfrew side suffered significant damage to the electrical systems required to operate the bridge.

"Urgent work is under way to identify the issues behind the damage and get the bridge back into action as soon as possible."

Temporary measures to open the swing bridge are being put in place to allow scheduled river vessels to pass.

The tidal surge on Saturday night saw the Clyde's water levels reach 6.7m at Renfrew.

The council was criticised earlier in the week for not raising flood barriers at the weekend, with local shops and businesses then flooded on Saturday night.

The local authority said this decision was because its data suggested the predicted tide levels would not meet the threshold needed to use the flood barriers, only for the tide to be higher than predicted.
