A planned revamp of Glasgow's landmark "Hielanman's Umbrella" - a glass fronted railway bridge near Central Station - has been put on hold.
Architects Dress for the Weather were commissioned in 2024 to create a fresh design for the site, which would have seen multi-coloured shops and neon lights introduced.
The area covers the bridge along with a small number of shops and venues beneath it, including the former Arches nightclub.
However, the rail operator said the project was now paused following a review, and Glasgow City Council said it was "reconsidering the future" for the area as part of a wider review into Central Station.
The nickname Hielanman's Umbrella - or Highlandman's umbrella - arose in the late 19th and early 20th Century when it became a popular meeting place for Gaelic-speaking residents of the city.
Thousands had moved to Glasgow after the Highland Clearances, and the bridge, which opened in 1879, served as a place to meet up in town with the added advantage of providing some shelter from the rain.
Work to improve the appearance of the area was originally scheduled to begin last August.
The new look would have been the first major work in the area since the 1990s, with an estimated cost of about £400,000.
The proposals included new cladding to shopfronts, dynamic lighting to track the movement of trains overhead and neon artworks under the umbrella itself.
New hand painted signage was also planned for all shopfronts and to the East and West facades.
Glasgow City Council, however, said it now wanted to integrated the revamp with plans for the area prompted by a major fire near the station in March.
A spokesperson said: "As part of the Central Station Area Study which was prompted by the recent major fire on Union Street in Glasgow, we will be reconsidering the future of the Hielanman's Umbrella within that wider work."

Dress for the Weather told industry publication Architect's Journal that it was "really disappointed" not to complete the project.
A Network Rail Scotland spokesperson said: "Following a review, the original proposal for Hielanman's Umbrella is currently paused. We remain in regular dialogue with Glasgow City Council and are exploring opportunities to take forward design and public realm elements in a future funding period.
"In the meantime, improvement works are ongoing, including upgraded lighting, enhanced cleaning and maintenance, and efforts to bring new tenants into vacant properties.
"We recognise the site's cultural significance and are continuing to assess what elements of the original plans can be progressed within current budgets."
Earlier this year the Hielanman's Umbrella area was hit by flooding, with water leaking from the street into the lower levels of Central station, although BBC Scotland News understands this is not a factor in halting the proposals.
It is also yards away from Glasgow's Four Corners, a section of the city often linked with anti social behaviour.
