Royal Mint ‘boldly goes’ with new Star Trek coin designs

Collectable coins celebrating 60 years of Star Trek on television screens are being launched by The Royal Mint.

The Mint has unveiled two 50p coin designs, with some featuring colour.

The colour coins are a reflection of the vivid outfits worn in the show, the Mint said, as advances in colour television were made in the 1960s.

The first coin design features the Vulcan salute alongside the words: “Live long and prosper”, and: “Star Trek 60,” marking the landmark anniversary.

The second coin showcases four spacecraft spanning different eras of the franchise, along with the words: “Star Trek 60”.

Tim Mulhall, head of fandom at The Royal Mint, said: “It’s a privilege for The Royal Mint to boldly go, celebrating 60 years of Star Trek with a keepsake that’s out of this world.

“Both collectable 50p coins are designed for fans who’ve grown up with the franchise and want a piece of that history to treasure.”

Ruth Henriquez, vice president of products and experiences, Paramount EMEA, said: “Star Trek has one of the most dedicated collector communities in the world, and these coins are a tribute to 60 years of the franchise.”

The coins can be bought from The Royal Mint from 9am on Thursday September 3, with prices starting from £19.95. The coins can be bought together at the same time from September 3, with the Vulcan Salute coin available as an individual coin from September 3 and the second spacecraft coin available as an individual coin from November.
