The Royal Navy's newest Astute-class nuclear-powered submarine has arrived at its home port in Scotland.

HMS Agamemnon will undergo sea trials and operational preparation after reaching HM Naval Base Clyde at Faslane.

The hunter-killer vessel, the sixth in the Navy's arsenal, is equipped with tomahawk land-attack missiles and torpedoes capable of striking targets up to 30 miles away.

The Navy's submarine rear admiral, Andy Perks, described HMS Agamemnon's arrival as a "significant milestone".

The 318ft-long (97m) vessel joins other Astute-class subs including HMS Astute, Ambush, Artful, Audacious and Anson, in the Navy's fleet.

A seventh sub, HMS Achilles, is currently under construction.

Astute-class submarines are the Navy's most advanced and powerful class of attack subs.

HMS Agamemnon departed its construction home at BAE systems in Barrow last week and went through its first dive at sea in the Navy's Inner Hebrides exercise areas en-route.

Rear admiral Perks said: "HMS Agamemnon's delivery reflects the dedication, skill and collaboration of thousands of people across our Defence Nuclear Enterprise, who have worked together to build one of the world's most capable attack submarines and deliver a formidable warfighting capability for the United Kingdom.

"I am delighted to welcome the submarine and her ship's company to their new home on the Clyde, and I look forward to seeing them join the operational fleet in due course."

The vessel, which has a crew of about 100 submariners, will have its performance tested during sea trials over the coming months.

Its arrival coincided with the 125th anniversary of the launch of Holland 1, the Royal Navy's first submarine..

HMS Agamemnon's commanding officer, commander John Gabb, said: "It is an enormous privilege to be the first person to command this vessel at sea.

"We will get to know Agamemnon well over the coming months, but this submarine is incredibly quiet, has a world-class Sonar and will be home to us all as we generate for operations."
