Russia has threatened to retaliate after British-made drones were used for the first time by Ukraine in strikes against Putin.

Moscow’s embassy in London warned the UK would pay a ‘higher price’ if it becomes more involved in the war in eastern Europe.

According to Russian state media, the embassy accused the UK of ‘deliberately betting on an escalation of the Ukraine crisis, while hypocritically claiming to be striving for peace’.

Repeating a common slur against Ukraine, the statement continued: ‘The United Kingdom is thus acting as an accomplice and accessory to the bloody crimes and terrorist attacks of Ukrainian neo-Nazis seeking to contain our country and to inflict maximum damage upon it using the hands of others.

BY MARK WORGAN The Royal Navy and British Army have carried out the first joint trials of a revolutionary British-built strike drone designed for use in both maritime and land operations. The Nyan One-Way Effector (OWE), developed by BAE Systems' subsidiary Callen-Lenz, was launched from the Royal Navy's experimental vessel XV Patrick Blackett during trials off the south coast of England earlier this month. The uncrewed aircraft has a wingspan of 2.9m (9.5ft) and is designed to carry out precision strikes against designated targets. The launch formed part of Exercise Neptune Reach, involving personnel from the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force under Project Vantage, a Ministry of Defence programme aimed at testing maritime attack drones. The system had previously been tested by the Army during Exercise Spring Storm in Estonia in May as part of the UK's contribution to NATO operations. The latest trials involved fitting a launcher to the ship's deck capable of firing the drone at speeds of up to 55 metres per second, allowing engineers and military personnel to assess how it performs when launched from a moving vessel. The Royal Navy's capability team and the Air and Space Warfare Centre are analysing the results, with further trials on board HMS Queen Elizabeth being considered. Luke Pollard MP, Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry, said: "Britain is serious about the transition to a Hybrid Navy with new, powerful drones at the heart of the Royal Navy. By bringing together Army and Navy expertise to field strike drones from a ship at sea, we are accelerating the capabilities our forces need to stay ahead of our adversaries." Lieutenant Commander David Burton, Maritime One Way Effectors Capability Sponsor for the Royal Navy, added: "This trial makes a significant step forward in delivering Maritime One-Way Effectors at pace. Under Project Vantage we are planning to integrate these capabilities into the Hybrid Navy, combining crewed platforms with uncrewed systems to expand reach, increase tempo and enhance lethality.??? The Nyan drone forms part of BAE Systems' FalconWorks research and technology programme, which is developing a range of uncrewed aircraft intended to operate alongside conventional military platforms.
