School overturns boy's detention in PE socks row

A mum said she was "absolutely baffled" by the decision of her son's school to give him detention for wearing the wrong coloured socks.

The punishment at Sir John Leman High School in Beccles, Suffolk, was imposed after the 11-year-old boy wore the wrong colour for PE lessons on two occasions, but it was overturned after his mother, Aisling, complained.

"Putting something as silly as the colour of someone's socks down as bad behaviour is ridiculous," she told the BBC.

The school has been contacted for comment.

Pupils at the school are required to wear white socks for indoor PE lessons and navy pairs for outdoor sessions.

But since starting at the school a few weeks ago, Aisling said her son had worn black socks on two occasions and had also forgotten his trainers once.

Despite his mum having "no idea" of her son's uniform breaches, Aisling said her son was told he would serve a lunchtime detention, before it was revoked when she intervened.

"I'm not against school rules and teaching kids to abide by necessary rules, but I am against disproportionate punishments for ordinary childhood mistakes," she said.

"It's absolutely crazy to police uniform right down to socks."

Aisling added: "He had his branded shorts, jumper, T-shirt and trainers, so I never in a million years thought, 'I must ensure [he has] a certain colour of socks'.

"I still do not quite understand why the colour of their socks has any relevance whatsoever to their education or their participation in a PE class."

The school's website states: "Any student who is not in the expected school uniform or following the school's policy will be placed in internal exclusion for the day to complete their work."

It comes a few years after a boy wore a skirt to his Woodbridge school after it would not let him wear shorts in hot weather, and a school in Cambridgeshire reprimanded a boy because his shoes "looked too much like trainers".
