A security alert in Dervock has ended after a suspicious object left on a windowsill was deemed non-viable and a controlled explosion was carried out.

The device, found in Greystone Crescent, was reported to police at about 17:00 GMT on Friday.

Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) Inspector Hamilton said officers noted that it was a "potential explosive device".

They evacuated homes and put cordons put in place to allow a more thorough examination of the items to be carried out.

Ammunition Technical Officers (ATO) attended the scene, working alongside police officers.

Residents were allowed to return to their homes shortly before 22:30 and all cordons have now been lifted from the area.

"We understand the disruption caused as this public safety operation was carried out, and we thank the local community for their patience," said Inspector Hamilton.
