Seven people have been arrested after a dad was allegedly attacked and killed in a ‘violent’ village street fight.

Anthony Jones – known as ‘Tony’ – was badly injured in the brawl on Thursday evening in Pontnewydd, near Gwent in Wales.

The victim, from Brecon, was taken to hospital where he died several days later.

Police were called to the scene on Mill Street at around 7.15pm on Thursday.

A murder investigation has since been launched and seven men –  aged 31, 39, 40, 45, 59, 61, and 73 – have been arrested.

They all remain in police custody.

A Gwent Police spokesperson said: ‘Officers investigating a report of violent disorder in Pontnewynydd, near Pontypool, on Thursday 6 August, have launched a murder investigation following the death of a 56-year-old man.

‘Gwent Police received a report of violent disorder involving a group of men in Mill Street, at around 7.15pm on Thursday 6 August.

‘A 56-year-old man – who can now be named as Anthony “Tony” Jones from Brecon – was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries and has since sadly died.

‘His family are being supported by specialist officers.’

Senior investigating officer, Detective Superintendent Laura Bartley added: ‘We recognise that reports of this nature will cause concern in our community, but we have officers working around the clock conducting enquiries as part of the investigation.

‘We’re trying to establish the movements of those involved both before and after the disorder and are asking motorists who were driving along Hospital Road, Mill Road and the surrounding areas between 6pm and 9pm on Thursday to check their dashcam footage.

‘Anyone with any information is urged to submit information via the Major Incident Public Portal or contact us quoting log reference 2600255536.’

Witnesses have been asked to call 101 or to report any information via the force’s website.
