Six people have been arrested and charged in connection with separate incidents of alleged assaults on police officers in Glasgow city centre over the weekend.

Police Scotland said three of the men, aged 34, 35 and 40, were due to have appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Monday.

Two men aged, 38 and 43, were reported to the procurator fiscal.

A teenage girl was also issued with a recorded police warning.

Local area commander Ch Insp Stephen McManus said: "Assaults on our officers are absolutely unacceptable.

"They have the fundamental right to come home from each shift unharmed.

"It is not part of the job, and it is important we report any violence against emergency service workers and hold those responsible to account."

McManus added the safety of officers was a priority for the force and there had been "significant investment in training and equipment.

Last month a BBC Disclosure documentary exposed crime and antisocial behaviour in the city centre, with social media posts claiming that the area had become a "no-go zone".

Earlier this year, Police Scotland introduced a dispersal zone covering areas of concern in the city centre, including Glasgow Central Station, St Enoch Square and Union Street.

It allows officers to issue a 24-hour ban on groups of two or more people in the area if their behaviour is "impacting on the safety and well-being" of others.

Police Scotland said over the weekend officers made further arrests for offences including assault, racially aggravated breach of the peace, drugs supply, possession of offensive weapons, an attempted wilful fire-raising and breach of a city centre exclusion order.

McManus said: "We will continue to provide a visible and proactive police presence in Glasgow City Centre to tackle violence, disorder, anti-social behaviour and drugs activity."
