South Park will be renamed South America for its upcoming 29th series, creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have announced.

The change appears to be a reference to US president Donald Trump signing an executive order in August to rename Lake Ontario as Lake America and his previous declaration that the Gulf of Mexico should be known as the Gulf of America.

The creators announced the name change by sharing a photo of a South Park sign with the world “America” written over Park.

A statement alongside the picture said: “Following their Emmy win for Outstanding Animated Program, South Park is making a big change.

“Creators Trey Parker & Matt Stone announce: ‘Inspired by the bravery and patriotism of Apple and Google, we are changing the name of South Park to SOUTH AMERICA. We especially want to thank our parent company Paramount — a Skydance Capitulation.’”

Paramount Skydance is the show’s parent company.

The Trump administration approved the proposed 111 billion US dollar (£81.9 billion) merger between Paramount and Warner Bros in June.

Paramount Skydance has said the merger will not close until June 2027 to allow time for regulatory reviews and ongoing litigation.

The statement added: “The 29th Season of the award-winning series will premiere Wednesday, September 16, at 10pm ET/PT on Comedy Central.

“New episodes will be available to stream on Paramount+ around the world, with next-day availability in the US, Canada and Australia.”

South Park follows the adventures of four boys – Stan, Kyle, Eric and Kenny – in the title town in Colorado.

The show, which debuted in 1997, is known for its profanity and dark humour and has been named by several publications as one of the greatest TV series of all time.
