A special meeting has been called to seek a "final decision" on long-delayed plans for a new primary school in the Borders.

Funding was earmarked for a replacement primary in Eyemouth more than a decade ago after it was agreed the current building was no longer fit for purpose.

However, progress has been hampered by a range of issues including Covid and rising costs, prompting Scottish Borders Council (SBC) to suggest creating a shared campus with the town's high school.

Parents have pressed for a replacement school on the site of the current primary and now a special meeting has been arranged for 17 September to try to establish a clear way forward.

A funding package of £15m was set aside for the project in 2015 after inspections showed the current building was in "poor condition".

After the plans failed to progress, last year education officials proposed creating a community campus within the town's high school to cater for all pupils and keep costs down.

Parents said that option was "fraught with potential problems and safety concerns". Their preferred option remains a new build on the current primary site.

SBC abandoned the co-location proposals just before Christmas and started a fresh consultation at the beginning of this year.

At a meeting in the spring it was agreed to seek additional funding for a new-build primary while also continuing to progress the co-location campus model as an alternative proposal.

However, parents recently marched through the town to show their frustration at the length of time being taken to reach a decision.

A meeting will now be held next week to try to bring matters to a head.

Carol Hamilton - who represents Eyemouth - said the council's Conservative and independent administration was committed to delivering a new school.

She added that it understood plans for an all-through campus were proving "increasingly challenging".

She called for a "final decision to resolve the issue" to be made "as a matter of urgency" and gathered the required signatures to hold a special meeting.

The meeting will look at how a new school for Eyemouth can be delivered "in the minimum time and in the most cost-effective manner".
