Spin when you’re winning – Robbie Williams named National Album Day champion

Former Take That singer Robbie Williams has been named as a National Album Day ambassador, saying “albums still matter”.
The 52-year-old will be given the title of Album Icon and see his 2000 studio album, Sing When You’re Winning, reissued on vinyl for the first time, for the event which takes place on October 17 and aims to celebrate and promote the art of the album.
Williams said: “Ask any artist: albums still matter. That’s why I’m happy to be part of this year’s National Album Day, celebrating the art of the album and just how important they are.
“And speaking of albums, they’re re-issuing one of mine, you might know it: Sing When You’re Winning.”

Williams follows the likes of PinkPantheress, Max Richter, and Melanie C as one of this year’s Album Icons.
A spokesperson for National Album Day said: “We are as delighted as we are honoured that Robbie has accepted our invitation to champion the album format and support National Album Day, this year celebrating iconic artists and their albums.
“He is an undoubted music icon and adds his powerful voice to other major artists advocating for the cultural importance of the album format.”
The day is held as a collaboration between the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) and the Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA), with themed coverage being provided on the day on BBC Radio 2 and BBC Sounds.

The event also sees a series of new albums released and classic records reissued, with a full list to be announced.
Williams’ third studio album, Sing When You’re Winning, which features songs such as Rock DJ, Supreme and Kids, the latter featuring Australian star Kylie Minogue, will be reissued as a limited-edition two-LP red and blue vinyl set.
As with the original version, the records will play at 45rpm, and the album will be available to pre-order from participating shops from October 6.
Williams released his debut solo album Life Thru A Lens (1997) after leaving Take That in 1995.
He has gone on to achieve seven UK number one singles and 16 UK number one albums, with his best known songs including Angels, Millennium and She’s The One.
He is also the most decorated artist in Brit Awards history with 18 gongs.
