His work takes him across different types of productions, from filming on location and working directly with clients to editing and developing longer-form projects. Recent assignments have taken him out of the edit suite and into the countryside in Buxton, a good example of how different one week can look from the next.

It is a pace Martin has been able to adapt to through a career that has already given him experience in several different working environments. Before joining Assignments, he worked for agencies as well as being self-employed, building experience across different clients, briefs and production styles.

That varied background has helped him settle into a team he describes as “varied, fast, challenging and enlightening”, although he is quick to add that he is still always learning.

While operating a camera and editing are at the core of Martin’s role, one of the parts he enjoys most is working with people.

Being client facing means every shoot brings a different dynamic. Sometimes that involves helping someone who is nervous in front of the camera feel more comfortable. At other times, it means responding to what is happening on the day and working with the client to shape the story as it develops.

For Martin, being able to make a difference in those moments is particularly rewarding. Production does not always follow a fixed script, and being able to read the situation, adapt quickly and help bring a narrative together is just as important as the technical side of the job.

That need to adapt is also reflected in the wider PR and communications industry.

Social media is one of the biggest changes Martin has seen during his career, influencing not only where content appears but also how it needs to be captured, edited and presented. A single production can now need to work across several different platforms and formats, often for very different audiences.

Looking ahead, Martin expects AI and social media to continue shaping the industry over the next five years. New technology will change parts of the production process, but the ability to understand a story, work well with people and make good creative decisions will continue to matter.

Outside of work, Martin’s interests are just as varied. He enjoys music and spending time outdoors, with surfing, cycling and running among his favourite activities, alongside playing guitar.

It is a mix that seems to suit someone whose working life rarely looks the same from one project to the next. Whether he is filming on location, working through an edit or helping shape a story with a client, it is the variety, the people and the opportunity to keep learning that Martin enjoys most about life at Assignments.
