Street fireworks arrests amid Bonfire Night disorder

Fireworks were set off in a residential street as 17 people were arrested on Bonfire Night across Greater Manchester.

A video, filmed on Thursday night, shows fireworks being launched in the street in all directions, which police said was one of several incidents linked to anti-social behaviour across the region.

More than 600 fireworks were seized and Greater Manchester Police officers carried out more than 160 stop-and-searches during targeted patrols in areas identified as hotspots.

Eight of the arrests were made in Tameside after reports of youths misusing fireworks in Millennium Green Park in Ashton-under-Lyne.

Police said a group was tracked by a drone unit before some arrests were made at a nearby shop on suspicion of affray.

Officers also used dispersal powers during the evening to prevent further disorder and said patrols would continue throughout the Bonfire Night period.

It is part of Operation Treacle, which is being carried out alongside Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, with firefighters and police working together to respond to incidents and share intelligence.

Chief supt Nicola Spragg said a "small minority" of people had misused fireworks and engaged in anti-social behavior.

'Fear and distress'

Spragg said: "Bonfire Night should be a time for families, friends and communities to come together safely and enjoy celebrations across Greater Manchester.

"Unfortunately, a small minority choose to misuse fireworks and engage in anti-social behaviour, causing fear, distress and even firing fireworks at emergency service vehicles."

Paul Fearnhead from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said firefighters attended a significant number of Bonfire Night-related incidents, including several deliberate fires.

He said: "Any behaviour that puts members of the public or emergency service personnel at risk is unacceptable and will not be tolerated."

Police reminded residents it was illegal for anyone under 18 to possess fireworks in a public place and an offence to throw or set off fireworks in the street.
