Two sisters have been unable to sleep in their bedroom for months because of black mould, their mum says.

Open University student Leah Morgan claimed the problem was so bad her 14-year-old daughter had collapsed and was now sleeping on a mattress in the lounge.

Her five-year-old daughter was still sleeping in her bedroom, she added, saying she had been complaining about the Bulwark, Chepstow, home to Monmouthshire Housing Association for years.

"My eldest just walked out of the bedroom one day and said her chest hurt and she wasn't feeling very well. She then collapsed on the kitchen floor," the mum-of-two said.

"We got her straight to the doctors who said she had a severe chest infection and the doctor asked 'do you suffer with any sort of black mould?'."

According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, Morgan, 32, was given a letter from her GP confirming both daughters had been seen with recurrent respiratory tract illnesses and it was likely mould was affecting their health.

Her youngest daughter, she said, had suffered repeated skin irritations and infections.

After her older daughter's collapse Monmouthshire Housing Association carried out work but Morgan said it had stalled.

Further work was only carried out, said Morgan, after a councillor raised complaints on her behalf in July.

But Morgan said she has not let workers into her flat, saying she had been advised to demand a plan to address the matter.

Monmouthshire Housing Association said it had upheld a complaint from Morgan about the time it had taken to respond to her reports of mould.

It said the immediate risk from mould had been removed.

"We are committed to working with the resident to agree any further actions that may be required," a spokewoman said.

"We are currently awaiting a response from the resident's appointed advocate so that we can discuss and agree the next steps."
