Tesco could open its first store on the Isle of Skye by the end of 2028.

Developer West Ranga Skye Limited has submitted a detailed planning application with Highland Council for a food store and a fuel filling station in Portree.

The proposed site near the town's new link road was previously earmarked for a supermarket by local authority.

West Ranga Skye Limited said the store could employ about 100 people, and construction work could start next summer if planning permission was secured.

Co-op is currently the largest food retailer on Skye, with three stores on the island.

There has been concern about lack of competition and those worries heightened when the Co-op was hit by a recent cyber attack last year, which left shelves empty.

Kate Forbes, who was island's MSP at the time, later revealed she had held talks with a large company about opening a store on the island to introduce more competition.
